This affects several models of dressers or shelves with drawers. All models have been sold for years at Ikea in North America.

29 million dressers affected

On all other markets where the dressers are sold, they meet thus the “stability requirements”. US media said 29 million chests are of the recall affected.

The American Consumer Agency CPSC makes fallen Ikea furniture responsible for the deaths of at least six children under three years. The dressers were not sure if they were not attached to the wall, the Authority said.

Six deaths in the US

According to the Swedish furniture giant, six deaths were reported in the US in the past 13 years, three of them since 2014. The children died while climbing the dresser, the case tipped on them. In none of the cases the dresser was as prescribed in the installation manual attached to the wall.

Some of the deaths are, however, according to the authority a long time ago. One child died already 27 years ago, the other cases are from the years 2002 to 2016. The CPSC knows by its own account in addition of 36 cases in which children were injured.

Even Ikea stressed the dressers should be attached to the wall to prevent it from falling. Anyone have any such piece of furniture and it had not yet screwed, it should clear out of the reach of children. Ikea offered free sets on to anchor the furniture.

Customers can obtain a refund but also the price. This applies to homes that have been purchased since of 2002. Older furniture be withdrawn at half price. The recall involves children’s furniture with a height of more than 60 centimeters, and more than 75 centimeters high furnishings for adults.

Note in the instructions

The Ikea boss in the US, Lars Petersson said, the models have an indication in the instructions that you must screw them to the wall. In the past year, the Group had free kits for fixing his chest model Malm distributed after there had been reports of deaths in children.

The Consumer Authority stressed other manufacturers were prosecuted if there is a risk that their furniture fall over. “I appeal to the furniture industry to bring rapid reliable models on the market,” said CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye
