First container ships pass new Suez Canal – Berliner Morgenpost

The new Suez Canal has passed a first test run. Three container ships have passed through the channel, reported the Egyptian state news agency Mena. The construction of the waterway had started eleven months ago. It runs parallel to 145 years old Suez Canal, which has long since reached its capacity limit. The official opening is scheduled for August 6. Egypt hopes that a significant increase of vessel traffic and additional revenue.
